How to Find Your Bra Size at Home

A simple, two-measurement method to find a starting size, plus the fit checks that matter more than the number on the label.

How to Find Your Bra Size at Home

Most of us choose a bra size once and keep buying it for years. Bodies change, and so do brands and styles, so it is worth re-checking your fit every so often. All you need is a soft tape measure, a mirror and two minutes.

Before you start

  • Wear a non-padded, unlined bra, or none at all.
  • Stand straight and relaxed, breathing normally.
  • Keep the tape level all the way round. A mirror helps you check the back.

Step 1: measure your band

Wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage, directly underneath your bust where the band of a bra would sit. It should feel firm but not tight. Note the measurement.

Step 2: measure your bust

Measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the floor and without squashing the breast tissue.

Step 3: compare with the size table

The difference between the two numbers guides your cup size, and your band measurement guides your band size. Because every style is cut a little differently, always compare with the size table shown on the product you are viewing. Treat your result as a starting point, not a final answer.

Fit checks that matter more than the number

  • The band does the work. It should sit level and not ride up at the back. Fasten a new bra on the loosest hook so you can tighten it as it relaxes.
  • The centre sits flat. The middle section between the cups should rest against your chest.
  • No gaps, no spill. Cups should hold you smoothly without wrinkling at the top or cutting in.
  • Straps support, they do not lift. If straps dig in, the band is probably too loose.

When to size up or down

If the band rides up, try a smaller band. If it digs in or leaves marks, try a larger one. When you change band size, you may need to adjust the cup too, because cup volume is linked to band size.
